God speaks to us in a way we can understand. God shapes his revelation to human ways of thinking. For the unbeliever that is enough to dismiss the revelation as a work of the human mind. For the believer it is simply another demonstration of God reaching out to human beings lovingly in a way that is human.
Jesus chose to be born of a human mother, who was not a divine person, to reach even more closely into our human condition. God’s choice of Mary is important to the human spirit. We need Mary to come to the fullest possible understanding of God. For many ages Mary has been idealized because she was singularly privileged; she became a very remote ideal. Who is the real Mary? The Mary of the Gospels appears as a plain woman living the same kind of plain life we do. She did her ordinary tasks, associated with her neighbors and, in every other way, was a simple person among simple people.
Thank you, Lord, for your mother, a human being with human feelings and even, I believe, a sense of humor. Enable me to become a fully complete human being.
