St. John has told us: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him may not die but may have eternal life…the light came into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light…” (1 Jn 3).
The first barrier to a change of heart is dishonesty with self, refusing to recognize the need to let go of our sins and our pride. The reason is attachment to the old ways. The old ways include the actions to which we have become accustomed and the belief that we can deal with our problems by our own strength alone. Human pride dies only after a great struggle and many disappointments.
When we become weary of the old ways and have failed many times to make ourselves better we become ready to really believe in God’s saving power. This is the moment when we become open to the gift of a living faith. We can come to believe in a God who is able and willing to set us free.
May your light enable me to see myself and my life in truth, Lord Jesus. Give me a deeper understanding of your mind and heart in all the events of my day.
