Following Jesus is a lot more than just learning some rules to keep and then following them. Rather, it is about centering our hearts on God and making sure that love is what is flowing through all our relationships.
In relationship with God: do I trust in his love and mercy? What is my image of God? Do I have a loving relationship with God?
In relationship to others: do I try to discover God’s image in others and help them to realize God’s plan in each of them or do I try to mold others into my own image?
In relationship with myself: do I accept myself and love my own uniqueness embracing my gifts while acknowledging my own limitations? Am I at peace within myself?
In relationship to nature: do I recognize that I am integrally united to and responsible for caring for God’s creation?
Living loving relationships is not as easy as following rules but it is the way of faith that Jesus teaches us. In the end, the spirit of the rules will be lived: the commandments, beatitudes, and laws of the Church, etc. not as obedience to external regulations but rather as expressions that flow out of my really being the loving person I am called to be.
