Jesus is coming back!
Today? Tomorrow? When?
Since the beginnings of Christianity we await the coming of the Son of Man, the return of our Lord. But today’s readings are not just about that definitive return of the Lord at the end of time. They are also readings that speak of the presence of the Lord with us in our most difficult times.
Just as the early Christians found strength and hope in the Lord under Roman oppression, when we face oppressive times that seem like the end of the world, the Lord is with us. Just as a tree in the early spring after a long and desolate winter finds its inner life capable of producing new tender sprouts and leaves, so too will we if we are rooted in the Lord.
Jesus is coming back today and tomorrow and always. He is near to the broken hearted. Many of our dreams, illusions and even the people we have loved may pass away, but his words and his presence will not pass away. With him we will find the inner strength to passion and death to new life now and in the definitive life to come.
