World Youth Sunday and World Priest Day
Unlike the apostles who last week asked a self-centered favor of the Lord, the blind man in this week’s gospel, recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, only asks only for mercy and for the gift of seeing the Lord so as to follow him.
The Lord is already near to Jerusalem where he will suffer and die for humanity. The blind man becomes a true disciple who drops everything, even his cloak, and without questioning, follows the Lord wherever he might lead.
Without questioning why he had been blind or why he had had to beg; without knowing where the Lord would lead him, or what might be asked of him; Bartimaeus follows the Lord.
Without knowing the why or the where or the how, we are presented with the challenge to do the same.
