When bad things happen to us are we like those in the Gospel who thought that the reason is God’s punishment for our sins? Is God a God of judgment and punishment? Jesus certainly doesn’t support that idea. Although we are all sinners in need of conversion, we are not to see every negative event in our lives as a punishment from God. We do need to see however how not only our sins, but also our indifference and apathy allow for sinful, unjust structures to grow. Then, we all suffer the consequences.
Each of us has been “planted” here on earth to bear fruit; to give of ourselves for the nourishment of all. If we follow the Lord, we cannot live in isolation only caring for ourselves. The Lord believes in each of us and continues to work with us patiently hoping that we will be fruitful in our service to humanity. As we look around us and at our world today we see the despair of so many people affected by war, hatred, cruel economic systems, etc. We cannot be indifferent. We must not wait for someone else to respond. Each of us has within us the life of Jesus who will nurture us so that we will bear fruits of solidarity, charity and justice in his name.
