The greatest temptation of a disciple is a sense of alienation from both God and our sisters or brothers in Christ. Why did you draw me to yourself in the first place? It may take many years before we begin to ask that question. This temptation can be a consequence of some infidelity; or it can be a purification, enabling us to see our faults and surrender them to God. If it is a purification, we can then rediscover the heart of Jesus on a deeper level of understanding and love.
Our more complete conversion needs this renewal of our relationship with God, with Jesus, with one another. True conversion is not only a matter of getting rid of vices; it must be a total surrender of self! The sign that we are succeeding is a growing sense of freedom from self. Weaning from self is not mainly something that we do. It is something that we allow to be done in us by grace. Its fruit is a freedom to love.
When I feel estranged from you and from others, Lord, show me any unfaithfulness in my heart. If you are purifying me, Lord, help me to let go of my selfishness and open my heart to love.
