We hear many times in the Bible of how we are called to share our blessings with others. Jesus told several parables showing how we are to care for the poor, weak, and oppressed. And while we do occasionally give at Church or to those we believe need it, how do we respond when asked to give? Many of us live in relative comfort, especially compared to those around the world who live in abject poverty and suffering. Even in our own communities, there are people who are in desperate need. Are we willing to help those who we may not see but still need our charity?
The Compassion Foundation is a group that provides grants to non-profits that work to assist struggling people in their communities. Their mission statement is to help with God’s love and compassion as their guide. Their grants have gone to support notable organizations that strive for change and to help those in need across Illinois. Some of the efforts we have supported include food pantries, projects to prevent child abuse, health care clinics, and suicide prevention services, among others. You can see the entire list of 2017 grant recipients here.
What is The Compassion Foundation?
In the late 1980s Fr. Joseph Muller, M.S.C., brought together a group of like-minded MSC friends and supporters to discuss ways to help the poor and needy of the Fox Valley area and introduce the MSC to the local communities. After discussion of a golf benefit and other charitable endeavors, the group agreed that the foundation should be based on the ideals of Christian compassion for all people, and not be limited to Catholic institutional needs. Since then, the Foundation has worked to raise funds for a variety of group in Illinois, all because of a small group of individuals who decided to share and act on their beliefs.
