Today we celebrate Orthodox Easter. Happy Easter!
The first reading today challenges us to be inclusive; to accept differences in our following of Christ. It was a challenge for early Christians to accept each other with their differences. It is still a challenge for us today to accept each other from our different Christian traditions. The blood of martyrs in the early persecutions of Christians helped them to focus more on what united them instead of what divided them. In that, there may be an important message for us today.
As Christian Churches, we all preach about the Lord, but the Gospel asks us to “love and keep the word”. While serious dialogue must continue on our theological differences, it is the witness of love that is our common mission to the world. We are not to be troubled or afraid of each other, still influenced by historically induced prejudices, but rather work together to give witness to the love that the Lord has taught us and allow the Spirit to work through us all for the good of all humanity.
So, Happy Easter to all!
