When we are put down by others we may be tempted to identify with Jesus who was put down. That way we can think we are noble in our humility. A saint in ecstasy may indeed want to be humbled with Jesus and want this without pride. Ordinary people will slip into vainglory, at the same time salving their pride.
Fame or obscurity, approval or put-down, praise or criticism—all these are circumstances. Our goal is to come into full harmony with the mind and heart of God whatever our circumstances. If fame and approval enable us to give witness, as they can, then they are valuable for the kingdom of God and for us. One need only think of the example of famous preachers who would have few hearers if they were not famous. If God prefers to leave us in obscurity and rejection that need not separate us from God. Nothing of this world need separate us from God.
Lord Jesus, I need to keep my focus on your will. Let me not be distracted by the all too human feelings which tend to sweep me away from you. Preserve me from both selfish ambition and a perverse satisfaction in my failures. Keep me true to your love of me.
