The most prominent feature of Jesus is his compassion. He constantly attended to people’s needs with deep feeling. He is fully human, even now when he comes to us in the sacrament of his body and blood. Yet he also has divine power. We need a savior who is both fully human and divine. Above all, we need a savior who is kind.
He also reaches out through us, through our kindness. He said: “Be compassionate, as your Father is compassionate….Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over will they pour into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you” (Lk 6). The measure we receive is to become more like Jesus. Even if our lives are otherwise troubled there will be the indwelling of the Holy Spirit with the fruits of his presence. We will receive the kindness and peace which we bestow on others.
Lord Jesus, when I respond to your grace and show compassion to others you give me much more than I can give. Thank you for your kindness to me and to all of those to whom I reach out in your name.
