There are no people so free as those who are united with God in paradise. Yet the saints cannot choose evil. The goodness of God is always clear to them. They always want to be one with his goodness. In the presence of perfect truth, they always choose truth. In the divine freedom, they soar on wings of perfect freedom.
Plainly, doing whatever we please is not true freedom. That is the illusion which traps every person who becomes enslaved to anything in this world. Many addicts, for example, are really seeking liberation from the troubles of life, doing it their way. We are free only to the extent that we are in harmony with God’s freedom. This penetrates every feature of our lives: how we pray, how we work, how we relate to others. No one is an exception. There is only one “way, truth and life” for any of us, and his name is Jesus, who opened paradise for us.
Set me free, Lord, from all illusions that enslave. Let no “thing” take the place of God in my life. Make me one with your mind and heart, and with your Father, so that I can become truly free.
