We who believe in the promises of God carry to the world a message of hope. Any of us who have ever tried to assist troubled people, especially people trapped by their sins or addictions, know that what they need at the beginning of their deliverance is hope. Hope makes it possible for them and for us to endure whatever difficulties we may face in becoming free and reaching our goals. When we convey a sense of inner peace and joy we can have a powerful influence in the lives of other people. The influence of Francis of Assisi through the ages is due in large part to the inner peace and joy which his life radiated.
We may ask: How can I radiate inner peace and joy when I don’t feel all that great? There must have been days when Francis didn’t feel all that great. Yet his spirit was positive and grateful and lovingly outgoing because of a peace deep within him even in the midst of troubles. Our own peace, too, can have deep roots.
Lord Jesus, you were called a “man of sorrows.” Yet underneath your sorrows was a deep gratitude, praise and joy. Give me the vision and the heart to live in this world as you did.
