Jesus promised that there would be wars and rumors of wars (Mk 13). The world around us is frequently in turmoil. Not only the large world but also our smaller world of family and work-place and local community can be in upheaval. What are we to do? Are we to retire within ourselves and pray in peaceful personal communion with the Lord ignoring the commotion? Are we to become involved both actively and emotionally, trying to solve the problems of our world?
Jesus had a similar choice. His solution was to engage with his world but also to maintain his contact with his spiritual roots. He would move from the crowd and its claims on him to the top of a mountain where he would lose himself in prayer to his Father, refreshing the eternal peace within his heart. Then he would return to the turmoil of this world bearing his Father’s peace to those to whom he ministered.
I pray for spiritual balance, Lord. Then I will neither forget the source of my spiritual life nor neglect to be a human being among human beings, sharing in the responsibility to build up the world about me.
