The sacredness of life is a truth very close to the sacredness of nature, for life is the supreme expression of nature. All life reflects, in its activity, the activity of its Maker. This is especially true of the life that can understand and choose in freedom. Human life is so precious that God has shared our nature in Jesus. Jesus has promised to raise not only our souls, but our bodies as well.
We live in an age in which human life is often held in little regard. There are many excuses made for killing what God has infused with his own living spirit. The dark side of humanity seems to have a death-wish. People destroy not only other persons; they destroy themselves as well. Jesus calls us to be witnesses to life. He has given our human nature great dignity by sharing it. Of all of his Father’s creation the part Jesus would have us be most zealous to preserve and cultivate is human life.
I must begin, Lord, by cultivating the life you have given me. Remove whatever death-wish may still remain in my heart. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, the giver of immortal life.
