Jesus said: “In the measure you give you shall receive” (Mk 4). We could take that to mean that God will reward us for doing good to others. We can also hear another meaning: that there is a reward in the very doing of good to others. If we believe that it is God’s very nature to love and do good then we become more like God when we do good. In this life on earth the result may not be obvious even though the change is already taking place. In paradise it will be easy to see that we have come into close harmony with God. Our bond with him will have a long history of loving along with him and doing good with him.
People who spend all their time and energy grabbing for themselves eventually end up by themselves with nothing but themselves for company. They become eternally alienated from God and others. Jesus would save us from that conclusion to our lives. He wants us to be happy in the life of God and the company of others.
Lord Jesus, teach me to appreciate that your directions are designed to save me from myself and to lead me to a happiness beyond all self-seeking. Bring me into harmony with your loving heart.
