The Spirit restores the bonds uniting humanity that had been ruptured by sin. Pentecost celebrates the restoration of communion with the Trinity. Before all of the other gifts and manifestations of the Spirit then, is community. The Church is born.
The first sign then of our living in the Spirit is our life shared with others in merciful love: in our families as Church; in our parishes and dioceses; in our relationships to all others and to creation. All the many gifts of the Spirit are given to bring us together in love.
Pentecost then is a celebration of the diversity of the human community called to be reconciled with God and so live in peace: one with another and in respectful harmony with all of creation. God’s indwelling in humanity, the Spirit, is renewing the face of the earth.
