The Lucan text of the Passion we read this Sunday contains among the last words of Jesus: “Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. Later, in the Eucharistic celebration, we hear his words from the last Supper: “This is the chalice of my blood …which will be poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.”
Both of the above texts call us to forgive. By focusing on the Lord and not on the offense of those who have hurt us, we can make the decision to forgive the people who have hurt or disillusioned us in life. The Passion gives us the example and the Eucharist gives us the strength to forgive others in memory of the Lord who died for us, rose for us; and is with us on our journey through life.
