When we make a deep commitment to follow Jesus we begin a new life which will make little sense to those who do not believe. At the beginning of this new life we may naively think that what we now see is clear to all. Soon, however, it will become obvious to us that what we see is not at all clear to them. A person who does not believe simply cannot understand what we have discovered. We begin to learn prudence in speaking about our relationship with Jesus. It isn’t that Jesus doesn’t love everybody, even those who do not know him. It is a matter of timing. We see more than we did before because the time is right for us. Our task is to be available when the time is right for someone else. Enthusiasm is no substitute for discernment and prudence.
Jesus forbade us to judge others. One of the reasons for avoiding judgment is that we cannot know what Jesus will do in the future in any other person. We have to remember our own ignorance before our change of heart.
Jesus, you came to heal what was wounded and to save what was lost. Make of me your helper in this ministry of compassion. Give me a share in your wisdom.
