Most people never have the social status they believe they ought to have. Few of us are ever more than small- or medium-sized frogs in our ponds. If the pond is large we feel small indeed. As our life moves on it becomes more and more likely that we will never fully use our talents. Perhaps not everyone feels this grief but many of us do. Many become sad and withdraw into themselves. Then their talents have no outlet at all and their status is reduced even further.
Jesus understands our predicament which is so very human. He says to us: “Remind yourself that I love you. Be content with letting me pluck out your faults and prepare you for a closer union with me. Do whatever comes your way. I will send you opportunities for loving others. The goal I set for you is not status but love. The one talent that really matters is love. Other tasks need to be done but only love will remain forever.”
When fear of failing comes upon me, Lord, may your wisdom and love clear away my fear. Convince me once more that the only lasting failure is a failure to love. I believe that your love for me will never fail.
