Reverend Gabriel C. Zepczyk, M.S.C., age 80, retired priest of the Diocese of Superior, passed away Saturday May 14, 2016, at Benedictine Health Center in Duluth, Minnesota. He was born the sixth of eight children to Joseph F. and Cordelia E. (Sheff) Zepczyk on March 26, 1936 in Phillips, Wisconsin.
Father Gabe pronounced vows as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart (MSC) on Sept 13, 1956, and was ordained a priest in Toledo, Ohio, on May 26, 1962. As an MSC he served in Papua, New Guinea, from 1964 to 1968 and Colombia from 1970 to 1976. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Superior on Nov 9, 1981. Father Gabe was appointed parish priest of Saints Peter & Paul in Moquah, Saint Peter’s in Dauby, and Saint Florian’s in Ino on Oct 1, 1980. He retired from active ministry on Nov 19, 2002, and has been in residence at Saints Peter & Paul rectory in Moquah. He was an amateur radio operator (Ham) since the early 1950s, a hobby he enjoyed all his life both here in this country and abroad.
Survivors include his siblings: Rose (Clifford) Babler of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Anthony (Lorraine) Zepczyk of California, Raphael (Darlene) Zepczyk of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Mary Zepczyk of Phillips, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Joseph, as well as one sister, Jeanne (Sister Mary Rose).
A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Gabe was held on May 19th at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland, with Bishop James Powers officiating and priests of the Diocese of Superior concelebrating. Fr Gabe was interred on May 20th in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Phillips, Wisconsin. Please pray for the peaceful repose of his soul in the arms of Our Lord.
