Brother Robert Murphy, M.S.C., a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, . . .
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 7, 1931. He graduated from St. Philip Neri Parochial School, Chicago, Illinois, in 1944, and entered Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, from which he graduated in 1948. He began his novitiate at Sacred Heart Seminary, Geneva, Illinois, in 1949, making first profession of vows in 1950. In 1956, he professed his perpetual vows.
Br. Murphy worked as a house brother, cook, laundryman, maintenance man, landscaper, and mechanic at various times during the succeeding years, in Geneva, Illinois; Sparta, Wisconsin; Reading, Pennsylvania; and Youngstown, Ohio.
He was quite active with the Knights of Columbus. Since 1971, he was a faithful friar and chaplain of the Greater Youngstown Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was also chaplain of the Father Gallagher Council #3144. In addition, he was a Eucharistic minister.
In Sept. 2003, Br. Murphy became a member of the Pennsylvania Community residing at the Sacred Heart Villa in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. In 2014, Br. Murphy became a resident of Valley Manor Nursing Home in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania.
Brother Murphy died on Monday, December 21, 2015, at 6:30 in the morning. His body will be at Sacred Heart Villa in Center Valley on Sunday afternoon, December 27. There will be a prayer service at 7 P.M. Sunday evening. The funeral mass will be Monday, December 28, at 10 AM in the chapel of Sacred Heart Villa, Center Valley. Very Rev. Raymond Diesbourg, M.S.C., USA Provincial Superior, will preside. Burial will follow in the MSC plot at St. John the Baptist Church, Ottsville, Pennsylvania.
