It is the lowly heart that understands Jesus. God reaches out to little ones. Because we are little we are often weary and need the refreshment of knowing we are loved by our Father. Jesus gave an example for he was meek and humble of heart. Walking with his disciples (Mt 11) he broke out into a hymn of praise for the divine wisdom that chooses what is empty that it may become full, and what is little that it may become great. We can sense Jesus’ wonder when he looks at what his Father is doing in the world.
The heart of Jesus is the model and the divine outreach itself. Jesus Christ was rich but he became poor to make us rich out of his poverty. Jesus’ poverty was first of all his poverty in spirit. He saw himself as being in the hands of God at every moment and in all that he was and did. Jesus tells us to seek first the kingdom of his Father who will lead us with wisdom and meet our true needs. It is the lowly heart that understands.
Lord Jesus, besides you what do I want that can really fill me? You have taught me that being poor in spirit is the greatest treasure, for you abide in those whose hearts are humble.
