Jesus’ preaching was in one way very conventional: “Reform your lives! The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt 4). John the Baptist taught the same. In another way Jesus was revolutionary from the start. Matthew has him going among the people in heathen Galilee. Luke has him preaching God’s love for the heathen in a synagogue. The prophets had foretold this but had not been believed.
What is most new about Jesus, of course, is that he is Son of God in the flesh. Also Jesus manifests his Father’s mind and heart. He reveals the inner life of God which is pure love, a love that creates and reaches out to restore his creation in Jesus. Moreover God actually loves heathens and invites them to himself through Jesus. In some measure we all carry the traces of the heathen and in some measure we all live with the life of God. There is no end to the reforming of our lives. At every moment the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Jesus, you have called me to manifest you in my life and by reaching out to others in your name. Give me a spirit that is as open as yours to all people and all the needs of my brothers and sisters.
