What are we to think of natural calamities— those that are really natural and not actually made by human beings? For his own reasons God chose to create a developing universe where natural calamities can occur. Though all things are in his hand he generally intervenes in a special way only through grace given to the free spirits of human beings. God’s style is to invite us to accept grace and then leave us free to respond. Our human freedom is a God-like talent, and so God’s grace enables us to rise above every calamity, natural as well as moral.
Sickness is a natural calamity which moves people to ask: Why me, Lord? We will not find an explanation of evil simply by looking at the evils of this life. The only explanation for a Christian is to be found in the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. In him we rise above all the afflictions of this world.
I do not want to suffer nor do I want to see others near to me suffer. However I want to be raised up with Jesus who chose to pass through suffering to come to his resurrection. Sustain me, Lord, when I weaken. Strengthen my faith.
