When Jesus calls us to himself to become part of what he is doing in the world we may think that our part is beyond human ability. Only God can create; only God can redeem; only God can direct his universe. He is the sole source of spiritual power in the world. He will make our efforts fruitful so long as we have confidence in him. As the messengers of his compassion, we will be the first to receive it.
There is one who began her mission with the words, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let what you have said be done to me” (Lk 1). Mary is our model of surrender and service, after Jesus himself. If we trust her we will receive her assistance in fulfilling what Jesus has given us to do. When God calls us he asks that we respond with faith. Faith unfolds in confidence, courage, and the love Mary showed in giving herself over completely to what God asked her to be and do.
Thank you, Lord, for giving me the example and help of your mother and the grace to appreciate your call to her and to me. Today, there will be times when I will need your help and hers to know what to do and to have the ability to do it.
