We can look around at the world and ask some hard questions. On the one hand, we see people scrambling for wealth, power and prestige and some of them succeeding. On the other hand, we see numerous people who don’t have the slightest chance to rise out of poverty and ignorance. We know too that in some other countries the way of life is so set that generations can pass in which people are literally doomed to slavery.
Even a person without religion can conclude that it is absurd that the meaning of human life can be measured by wealth, power or prestige. The slaves too are human. We can then ask questions of ourselves: What is worth seeking in life? What is of value? In that way we discover God as the One who gives meaning to life. In Jesus we who believe find God’s outreach to the poor. In the poor we find God’s image. In ourselves we find our own dignity and calling.
I give myself to you, Lord, to be shaped into a disciple who truly represents you in the world in which I live and work. I pray that I may be able to help others discover a God who gives meaning to life and who cares for the poor.
