In all of the Old and New Testaments we cannot find an example of faith greater than that required of Joseph and Mary in their relationship with Jesus. From the beginning Joseph was asked to accept a wife who was both a virgin and a mother. He had to see the Messiah in the child given into his care. Mary together with Joseph must have been perplexed by Jesus on other occasions beside the finding in the temple when Jesus was twelve.
The humility of Joseph is reflected in the swiftness with which he accepted God’s guidance and fulfilled his role behind the scenes, as it were. Moreover he was pure of heart not only in regard to chastity but also in regard to his motives for everything that he did. We can see him too as a model for everyone whose life consists of ordinary work. Joseph became a great saint, a truly holy person, in a carpenter shop. In Joseph, God has given to all ordinary people a sign of what God considers truly important in life.
When I balk at following the path on which you have set me, Lord, or when I seek my own glory remind me of Joseph. I pray that he may teach me how to live.
