In our time, people are becoming more and more concerned about their environment. A lot of the attention is based on fear. Many peoples have had a deep reverence for their environment based not upon fear but upon an appreciation of the beauty and worth of their natural surroundings.
Love of the visible creation is not a new idea in Jewish and Christian traditions. The ancient writers frequently praised God in the setting of the natural wonders he has made. St. Francis glorified the Maker of the world in the beauty of all creatures, great and small.
For disciples of Jesus, the environment is the Garden in which our Father has placed us so that we can learn from its beauty about his beauty, and in which we ourselves can grow to our full potential.
Give me a reverence for all of your gifts, Lord. Help me to regard and tend the Garden in which you have placed me, with the spirit of a St. Francis so that I may praise you in all you have made.
