“You are the light of the world.” (Mt 5) The modern world is full of flashing lights and shouting voices hawking every kind of wares. Some of these wares are ideas; others are things. The philosophy of the world is purely this-worldly: “Get what you can. Get as much of it as you can. Get it any way you can, at whatever cost to others.” Pleasure and power are the supreme guiding principles, whatever lip service is given now and again to spiritual values.
Disciples of Jesus represent a very different point of view. We regard the meaning of life as much more important than pleasure or power. We share this outlook with many wise persons who are not Christian, who have concluded that only spiritual values can give true meaning to life. When we live in accord with our faith conviction, we are a light to the world. We show a better way. Jesus is able to reveal the truth through us. That is what we are called to be and do.
Enlighten my mind, Lord, and give my heart the courage to live by what I see. Then I will truly be a reflection of your light in a world that so much needs your light.
