Dear Friends of the MSC,
This issue of a New Heart for a New World focuses on Life’s Healing Journey ministry. These retreats offer personal healing and spiritual growth through an encounter with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the life-long journey in developing a personal relationship with the living God through understanding the endless love and mercy he offers us.
Fr. Peter Campbell, MSC, developed LHJ retreats in the 1970’s. When he saw all the hurt experienced by the people he met, he wanted to provide an opportunity and safe place for people to express and share their fears, losses, and disappointments. He wanted them to get in touch with God’s love and healing. He offered participants a loving ear without judgment. Blessed Paul VI once said that we need to have a listening heart for one another. Life’s Healing Journey retreats receive people without judgment; much like Jesus did with the woman caught in adultery or like the father of the prodigal son, receiving him home with open arms. LHJ offers God’s loving presence, as expressed in the Heart of Jesus. The retreat team listens to them and provides a spiritual community as they face and cope with pain and suffering in their lives.
The Life’s Healing Journey Retreat is an important resource for the MSC as its message is relevant to any person, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or faith. The LHJ ministry is both unique and uniquely situated to respond to the contemporary call to evangelization. It is a crucial part of how the MSC are going “out in the streets” to reach those who are hurting. These retreats have loyal participants and volunteers because of the lasting healing that has been brought about through them. The message of healing love, of true compassion, and the communities built around these retreats are all an actualization of the original MSC purpose of sharing God’s merciful love with a broken world.
The MSC can evangelize and be missionaries to any population through these retreats and with spirituality declining and a broken culture in the United States we have a call to share this special charism.
As a ministry that is based on mercy, healing and communion, Life’s Healing Journey is also precisely the kind of evangelization called for by Fr. Chevalier, by Pope Francis, and by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Fr. Raymond Diesbourg, MSC
Freedom and Healing Are Possible
The Life’s Healing Weekend Retreat is a weekend retreat that allows individuals who are dealing with all kinds of hurts to encounter the living God, who loves all with both a divine and human heart. Through this encounter with Jesus, individuals find true and lasting healing.

Group Sharing: Encouraging freedom from your heavy and lonely burden.
“My experience of the LHJ retreat was very powerful for me. I originally thought it was only for those who had traumatic life experiences. The retreat helped me to realize that in my relationships I didn’t trust people, and I was selling myself short in all areas of my life. I am now very happy that I attended the LHJ retreat because it helped me feel more secure and confident, as well as to accept myself and my decision making. Thank you so much LHJ!”
Kate W., Life’s Healing Weekend Attendee
“For the first time, I learned that forgiveness is a journey, a process and a decision. Others have said how much I have changed, and I say thanks to the LHJ Retreats, which saved my life and my marriage. The funny part is I didn’t think I needed this retreat until after I experienced it. Today, I feel more complete, whole, and happy.”
Jose R., Life’s Healing Weekend Attendee
“I was able to work through the childhood sexual abuse I experienced. Sharing my experiences in a small group setting helped me break the silence. The LHJ retreats have transformed my life.”
Joe F., Life’s Healing Weekend Attendee

Our Life’s Healing Journey (LHJ) retreats provide a powerful opportunity to experience God’s love as we look into our own lives journey. Our retreats are not only for people who have had a traumatic life experience; they are also a way of “recharging ourselves” to gain a more positive outlook, find peace within ourselves, and purpose and value within our lives. During the retreats, we discover what it means to live in the present authentically as a child of God. We get to shed light on those areas where we have limited ourselves from living life to the fullest, and holding ourselves back from living powerfully and passionately in the NOW. We discover that we are wonderfully created by God, and begin a healthy relationship with a loving and compassionate God who loves us just the way we are.

Each month, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the United States pray a novena to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for a special intention taken from the Holy Father’s intentions. To join us in the novena, simply set aside time to say the rosary each day during the dates below, for the intention listed for that month.
October 21-29: That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.
November 18-26: That national leaders may commit themselves to ending the arms race, which victimizes so many innocent people.
December 23-31: That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading that faith and forming the new generations.
