Life’s Healing Journey Ministry (LHJ) was co-founded by Frs. Peter Campbell, MSC, and Gene Trainer, almost forty years ago. It came from the need to respond from a faith-based perspective to those dealing with sufferings, losses, and disappointments, which are an inevitable part of human life. Throughout the years, this ministry has grown from one to three retreats including Life’s Healing Weekend, Healing Childhood Hurts, and the Spiritual Journey. Each retreat can be taken independently; however, completing the series of the three retreats provides a better understanding of God’s unconditional love by helping participants to seek and experience a personal relationship with the true God. In this way, one looks at life with a true perception of God and of self. The awareness of being a child of God begins a deep transformative process towards healing. We move from a destructive pattern caused by our poor self image to a healthier way of living. We find joy and peace in life. If pain and suffering appear in our life again, we are better equipped to deal with it.
The retreats have a great impact on those who have participated. Marie attended the LHJ retreats, desiring healing of personal events in her life. When Marie came to the retreat, she said she was an atheist and her experience of life was that of physical and emotional abuse as a child. When she left the retreat, she understood the importance of establishing a healthy relationship with the loving God and realized that He had always been at her side, throughout her pain and suffering. After a couple of years in her healing journey, Marie became a strong advocate working with women who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.
Life’s Healing Journey is a spiritual journey. It is a spiritual source of energy and strength. The program helps us develop a healthy spirituality at times when we feel isolated or desperate, despite events that can shake our spirituality and beliefs at their core. We need God’s love to face the reality of pain, to let go of resentments, and to move towards forgiveness. These retreats can help us correct a distorted image of God that can affect our relationship with Him, with ourselves, and with others. When the pain and suffering we carry are so great, it takes time, energy, and dedication to let go of our burdens and allow unity, trust, and love to take root. The base of the LHJ retreats is the Spirituality of the Heart revealed by Jesus’ humanity. Experiencing the love of God that is personal, unconditional, and faithful is what gives us the strength, the courage, and the grace needed for healing and transformation to take place. It is in this relationship with the loving God that we get to trust in Him and our self.
