The Father has given to us an open declaration of his love and purpose in the heart of Christ. From the moment the Son of God dwelt among us God shared our tragic condition and by sharing redeemed it. The word “tragic” is not exaggerated. The very freedom which makes human beings noble has by its abuse made us all slaves. The first and most important quality of the redeeming act of Jesus is that it was an act of the Father through the obedience of the heart of Jesus. Even the love of Jesus has this origin. “Then I said, just as I was commanded in the scroll of the book, ‘God, here I am! I am coming to obey your will’” (Heb 10).
It was the will of the Father to reach out to us through a human sign, a revelation of his love which even the blind could see if they would. Jesus chose the Cross to display the extent of his Father’s love. It was this free choice that pleased his Father.
Your obedience, Lord, was an overflow of your love for your Father and for me. Help me to understand the Father’s will for me as a loving invitation to give myself freely in harmony with his love.
