Jesus said, “The truth shall make you free. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (Jn 8 & 14). Our freedom to surrender our hearts and minds and wills to God is a sharing in the freedom of the heart of Jesus. It is a spark of God’s own freedom, creative and restoring.
Freedom develops in the company of other human beings. Left alone, there is no one to reflect us to ourselves. God can and sometimes does give the grace of true freedom to a hermit. Ordinarily however it has pleased him to train us as his disciples and grant us the grace for growth in freedom in the companionship of others. The influence of being with others is not magical. Our freedom depends upon our acceptance of others as brothers and sisters. Otherwise, we can become eccentric hermits in the midst of a crowd. A sharing of life and work in the name of Jesus requires that all be filled with his spirit. When the spirit is good, life together is not only free but joyous.
Lord Jesus, you have called me into a human community to make me more human. Unite us in your love. Make me a center of peace and joy among my companions.
