Why is it necessary to ask God to remove our moral faults? Since he knows them and we know them, why must we ask? Is it because we have to talk God into doing something on our behalf? When God removes our moral faults he is more ready to respond than we are to ask. We need to ask because that is the only way to get ourselves into motion to cooperate with God’s grace. We need to ask frequently because it is human nature to slip back into old ways.
Removing moral faults is a lifetime process. Over time others will see the improvement before we do especially if they haven’t seen us for a while. Jesus compared the process to the growing of a plant. Impatient beginners want to see the grass grow before their eyes. They want to become instant saints. It does not work that way, but it does work if we persist in being honest with ourselves, asking for guidance and cooperating with God one day at a time.
One day at a time I need your healing power in my life, Lord. One day at a time remove my moral faults and make me more like yourself. Bring me to be the person you would have me be.
