Genesis says: “God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them” (Gen 1). Everything human including our sex is somehow a reflection of God. In a broad sense, even rocks and trees reflect God, for God is the model for all that exists. Human beings are singled out because of a very special reflection to be found in us, to oversee God’s creation.
God is pure spirit and the most perfect reflection of God must be spiritual, that is, in the human mind and heart. When we look into ourselves to find what makes us like God we can see our capacity for wisdom and our freedom, especially freedom to love. Why did God make us in his own image? Certainly God has nothing to gain. The only possible answer is that it is God’s nature to share his life, his wisdom and his freedom—that it is his nature to love and thus he chose to create.
Once, Lord, I knew you as a God who dispenses pleasures to the just and punishments to the wicked. Both pleasures and punishments were solely of the earthly kind. Now I know you as a God who chooses to share his very life with me both now and hereafter.
