Jesus said: “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day—while he sleeps, when he is awake—the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time; he starts to reap because the harvest has come” (Mk 4).
In the kingdom of God all of us have our callings. They are like the seeds of the parable, very small at the beginning. If we respond to God’s call, the seed will mature, because that was God’s intention when the seed was sown. At the right time, in God’s providence, we will begin to reap; our work will be fruitful. Jesus speaks of us as sleeping while we wait. He is not recommending sloth, but rather the wisdom to realize that it is God who brings about a fruitful result, though certainly we are called upon to cooperate.
Let my “sleep” be a peaceful resting in you, Lord, while you guide my life and action. Give me full confidence in your ability to make the seed you have planted fruitful in your time and in your way.
