We hear Jesus’ voice because he is trustworthy. He accepts us as we are so that we can become better. He is not surprised when we sometimes wander. He doesn’t stop loving us even when we sin, because we are “written on his heart.” He is faithful when we are young and old, well or ill, wise or unwise. While we change, his concern for us never changes. He has been faithful to us in many situations and throughout our lives. We have often tested his faithfulness.
Jesus said, “I give them eternal life.” It is personal love that gives meaning to life. All of us have seen many people spend their lives looking for a happiness that constantly escapes them. They are like sheep running in circles not really knowing where they are going. Our own search for the meaning of life led to the heart of Jesus simply because he reached out to us. Responding to him means being willing to “throw away our lives,” as it were, so that we may find true life.
How long I have wandered, Lord, before you found me and brought me back to yourself. Losing my life for you has given my life an immortal and loving meaning. I thank you for your loving kindness.
