Jesus’ education was a two-way enterprise. Mary surely learned much watching her Son as he developed and fulfilled his mission. Luke says: “His mother meanwhile kept all these things in memory. Jesus, for his part, progressed steadily in wisdom and age and grace before God and men” (Lk 2). Conversely, Jesus learned from Mary. He grew up and learned as any human being does for he was like us in all things though he did not sin. Human beings learn from their parents. This is particularly true of attitudes and behaviors. The compassion of the human heart of Jesus, then, reflects not only the compassion of God; it reflects the compassion of Mary as well.
Mary has a compassionate understanding of what Jesus’ disciples experience. She understands the commitment that Jesus expects of them. In our lifelong pursuit of Jesus’ plan for us we can have no better guide than Mary who knows the heart of her Son through and through.
Guide me, Mary, to a deeper understanding of what Jesus has in mind for me and for the world in which I live and work. I pray that I may learn from the heart of Jesus as you did.
