Our baptism gave us a share in God’s life and removed our sins. When we received the divine Spirit we were purified in Jesus’ death and elevated in Jesus’ resurrection. Most of us find that we need a second renewal sometime in life. At the beginning of our turning our lives over to Jesus once more, we find a pattern similar to that of baptism. We receive a grace which enables us to find freedom from inner obstacles: sin, faults and attachments. At the same time, we regain freedom for a new way of life, based on love of God and others.
It is a benefit to have a nature that is more free and therefore more God-like. A dividend is that we are better able to receive and express God’s love. We become able to live on a divine plane with the risen Jesus. However it would be folly to neglect to let God break the bonds that still tie us down. The obstacles are real. As one saint put it, even a spider’s thread can keep a bird from flying if the thread be not broken.
Lord Jesus, I hope to abide with you as a free spirit. Break my bonds so that my life may become truly risen and God-like. Purify me so that I may live in you.
