To find God as God is, can only be done on God’s terms. That means letting go of every pet idea and being open to God’s lead on our spiritual journey. Even those who will eventually come to see God more nearly as God is may believe they are losing faith, when what they are really losing is an outworn idea of God—an idol. God is ahead, leading to something new, something more true.
Reflecting on the Gospels can reveal to us a more true understanding of God. Yet we need reflection on experience as well. Jesus teaches us about himself in every-thing that happens to us. We also become more tolerant of how Jesus is leading others. What is appropriate for them may be very different from what is appropriate for us. “In my Father’s house, there are many mansions” (Jn 14).
The journey is full of surprises. Wherever we are in our journey God has not abandoned us. He is leading us on to something greater.
Give me trust, Lord, that you know what you are doing in my life. Give me patience with myself, with others—and with you.
