The journey of faith enters into our prayer. On days when we are perplexed, it is entirely suitable that we tell God that we are perplexed. Any other prayer would not fit the reality of our lives at that moment. If we are engaged in a struggle, whether with some situation or within ourselves, that is what matters not only to us but to God. Therefore it is appropriate that we pray about it.
When God occasionally gives us a preview of the peace and joy he is preparing for us, prayer becomes a simple enjoyment of God. Our hearts rise up spontaneously to possess him while his Spirit possesses us. Anyone who has ever been with Jesus on the mountain of the Transfiguration will never forget it. The experience will shape our spiritual journey from that time forward though there may be some straying along the way. Jesus’ invitation to return to him is an open invitation. However we pray all roads lead from the free gift of God and toward him.
You teach me to pray in many ways, Lord. Always you are teaching me to trust you and to seek your presence in my life and even in my struggles.
