Jesus was constantly guided by the Spirit. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, St. Mark tells us: “…the Spirit sent him out toward the desert…” (Mk 1). The Holy Spirit anointed him at the Baptism in the Jordan. In the Holy Spirit, he was bonded to his Father’s will.
In The Living Reminder Henri Nouwen wrote: “In order to be a living reminder of the Lord, we must walk in his presence as Abraham did. To walk in the presence of the Lord means to move forward in life in such a way that all our desires, thoughts and actions are constantly guided by him…a life in which absolutely nothing is done, said, or understood independently of him who is the origin and purpose of our existence.”
We are a reminder not because of our own unaided efforts. We are a reminder because of what the Holy Spirit is doing while we are working…or for that matter, being, in our journey through the world.
I pray that I may walk with the faith of Abraham and rely at every moment on the guidance of your Spirit, Lord. Only then can I be an authentic reminder of you.
