“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places…” (Jn 14). One of the freedoms that Jesus brings is freedom from a narrow view of salvation. Jesus’ enemies had relegated those not like themselves to damnation. Jesus reached out to a great variety of people and continues to do so through his Church.
No one can read the mind and heart of another person nor can anyone know another person’s future grace and response. The history of Christianity is full of examples of unlikely people who became saints. The history of other religions is full of people who were filled with the spirit of goodness and dedication to God as they understood God.
One kind of reconciliation is the ability to relate to persons different from ourselves whether in culture or belief. If our faith is deep we can risk these contacts. A large and free heart can reach out. Mutual respect is the best seed-bed for telling people about Jesus.
Preserve me from narrow-mindedness, Lord. Let me appreciate your work in the minds and hearts of all peoples however different they may be from myself.
