“The truth will set you free” (Jn 8). How is Jesus “the truth?” First, he is the true revelation of the Father. Deep inside, human beings want to see God, though many do not understand their own desire. God is infinite. To try to see God directly is an exercise in futility. That is one reason God the Son took a visible human nature. Jesus is a mirror in which ordinary people can see God, from the beginning of their conversion.
Another way in which Jesus is the truth is that he reveals the faithful love of the Father. God is true to the covenant which he made with us. God will not let us down. Whoever receives this truth and responds to it will be set free.
The freedom of spirit which Jesus promised is freedom from self—which tries to play God in our own lives and the lives of our neighbors. We no longer have to save ourselves and judge others. By “let-ting go and letting God” we let God into our hearts and learn how to love.
You have set me free, Lord Jesus. You have given me your Spirit to guide me. May I value your gift as I follow your lead this day, drawn by your love.
