The message of Jesus in its simplest form was: “The reign of God is at hand” (Lk 10). That was obviously true for the whole world when Jesus first sent out his disciples. It has always been true for each of us individually. The first hearers of our witness to Jesus’ word are ourselves. Our hearts are the world that needs to turn to God and be renewed. We evangelize ourselves, so to speak, when we meditate in Jesus’ presence.
The credibility of our witness to others depends upon the depth of conversion that has occurred in our own hearts. We can only proclaim what we have seen and touched, as St. John says (1 Jn 1). In a sense, on each new day, the reign of God is at hand. Each day is a new opportunity for a new encounter with Jesus in prayer, in our communities and in our outreach to others. The Christian spirit is a spirit of expectation. We can never know before-hand what graces God has prepared for us.
Lord, I look forward to this day because I believe that you have prepared it as an opportunity for me to draw closer to you and to witness your loving outreach to others. Let me live it in your love.
