Jesus will have compassion on his poor. Who are his poor? Some preach power as the way to overcome the world and self. But he called blessed the powerless; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. They shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He has led them out of the hands of the powerful. These powerful persons reign in hell, the hell they have made for themselves and their disciples.
Jesus was very much concerned for those who are poor in the wealth and power of this world. Moreover, he makes plain that those who exploit the poor cannot enter his kingdom. Yet the poor to whom he offers the kingdom are not simply those who are powerless in an earthly sense. Indeed, these may be rich in desire for power and wealth. He praises those whose hearts belong entirely to God whether they be rich or poor by an earthly measure, and then calls them to show justice and mercy. He will have compassion on his poor.
Lord Jesus, show me how to keep my priorities straight. May I seek justice for all in this world while always putting spiritual things first as you did.
