Jesus criticized the religious leaders of his time for laying burdens of guilt on people without lifting a finger to lighten them (Lk 11). It is easy to make rules for others and condemn them if they do not follow our ideas about how they should live. This costs us nothing.
Outreach to people puts us into contact with the chaos in which many persons spend their lives. Though we cannot judge the consciences of others, we can see them wandering in circles, often carrying the burdens of unspiritual and imprudent lifestyles. Merely proclaiming rules and judging are not likely to be useful. If we really want to help others find their way to peace and fulfillment we need to be prudent and patient. We also need patience with ourselves. God is very patient with us all. Who can tell what the outcome will be? The history of God’s saints is filled with surprising examples of changes of heart. Our part is to be available when we are needed.
Give me a share in your larger vision of the world, Lord Jesus. Give me a heart that can embrace all and be ready to tell them of your love when they are open to your grace.
