There is a saying: “God writes straight with crooked lines.” The lines of life appear crooked to us: sickness, addictions, even sins. In the end those who rely on God can learn from them and find a new and higher way of life. Does God take pleasure in our sickness, addiction and sins? Surely he does not! However he can make of them opportunities if we are willing to cooperate.
There have been many people who became mature disciples of Jesus, shaped by rising above their weaknesses and faults. Examples are Peter’s denial in the courtyard of the high priest and Augustine’s entrapment by his lust before his conversion. There are few of us who cannot find some example in our own lives where we became wiser and more free after a period of folly and enslavement.
God’s grace is greater than any sin, any folly. He has a long view of what we can become. There is no line so crooked that he cannot make it straight again.
Lord, I have only a poor understanding of myself and your working in my life. However I believe in your providential and loving guidance.
