The earliest disciples of Jesus were mostly nobodies who belonged to an obscure sect that was misunderstood and abused. The disciples were not, by and large, the wise and the powerful of this world. They believed that Jesus had lived and taught and had been crucified, that God had raised him from the dead, and that Jesus was with God. They believed that they were raised with Jesus, that even now they lived with the life of God.
They were not so much triumphal as simply joyous and thankful. They could wonder that God would reach out to people who were nothing and lift them up to become like God. For 2000 years, the Holy Spirit has guided Jesus’ disciples to a more complete understanding of Jesus. Scholars have explored what and who he is in great detail. However we still need the freshness of a simple, joyous and thankful faith, a sense of having been lifted up by a loving God.
Lord Jesus, you want me to be a joyous disciple not because the world is such a joyous place but because I live in you and you live in your Father. Thank you for bringing me into your risen life.
